Matthew Hall Christie of Denver, CO and Greenville, SC passed away August 18, 2021 at age 31. Matthew was born in Greenville, SC on September 24, 1989 to Daniel and Claire Christie. He attended Augusta Circle Elementary, Hughes Middle School, Bishop England High School (Charleston, SC) and Greenville High School.
After High School, Matt attended the College of Charleston majoring first in Marine Biology and later in Geology subsequently earning a Bachelor’s of Science in Geology. While at the College of Charleston Matt was a member of SAE fraternity through which he made a very large number of lifelong friends.
Throughout his childhood Matt was an avid outdoorsman. He was member of the Boy Scouts of America where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout through America’s Troop 19. Matt spent his summers either on Atlantic Beaches or in the Appalachian Mountains and as such developed a deep passion for both the oceans and mountains, and was happiest in the outdoors variously hiking, camping, skiing, waterskiing, sailing, offshore fishing and spelunking. During his time in Colorado, he deeply explored the mountains of Colorado and Utah, in particular, during extended rock hounding, caving, backpacking and river rafting expeditions.
Since graduating from College, Matt has been employed principally as an offshore geologist, seafloor surveyor and 3D scanning modeler/analyst, variously working for Fugro Offshore Services, Standard & Poor Global, 3D at Depth, AutoDesk Fusion, and Rock Bottom Hydrology, LLC, the contract ocean geology and 3D survey company he founded and led.
Matt will be remembered by his family, friends and colleagues for his joie de vivre, his gregarious and open nature, and kind heart. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Surviving are his parents, Daniel H. and Claire D. Christie; his sister Catherine Victoria Christie, of Greenville, SC; his brother Timothy James Christie of Chicago, IL; his paternal Grandmother Marie Hodges of Greenville, SC; his paternal step-grandmother, Ruth Christie of Asheville, NC; his uncle David M Christie (Anne) of Ithaca, NY, his uncle Dr. Peter J Christie (Heidi) of Houston Texas, his aunt Amy M Christie (Ed) of Kingston, NY; and his uncle Robert B Avery, Captain USN (Retired). He is also survived by his great aunts Carol Provost of Springfield, VA and Linda Pappas (Art) of North Tonawanda, NY, and his great uncle, Buddy Smith of Charleston, SC and many first cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal Grandparents James and Ruth Dantzler of Charleston, SC; his paternal grandfather David Christie of Asheville, NC and his aunt Julie Avery of Chapel Hill, NC.
The family will receive friends and family at a Memorial Service for Matt which is to be held at 1pm Saturday, September 25, 2021 at the Kilgore-Lewis House which is located at 560 N Academy St, in Greenville, SC. COVID protocols will be followed and include masking requirements and social distancing as required.
