Mary Ann Sutherland, 90, died peacefully in the early morning hours on August 2nd, 2012, in Denver Colorado. She was born January 29, 1922 in Kalamazoo Michigan to Dr. and Mrs. Dan Eaton. Mary Ann's life was filled with love and loss, with the death of her father at age 5, and the loss of her mother Francis Eaton and brother Dan Eaton when she was 19. It was her amazing strength of character, humor and inner happiness that seemed to carry her throughout her life. After graduating from Wheelock College in Boston and teaching elementary school for 2 years, she married the love of her life, Louis Sutherland in 1946. Their 63 year marriage revolved around their children, grandchildren and their many friends and family. Mary Ann will be remembered for so many things, her kindness, her smile, her laugh, and her sense of fun. She brought joy to everyone she met right up to the end. Her favorite song in her later years was Louie Armstrong's It's A Wonderful World, a song that reflected her attitude as well as her soul. We are saying goodbye to our mother privately in Kalamazoo, with a small service to be planned later in Denver. Mary Ann is survived by her daughters, Mary Lou Palley (John), Margaret Gall (Don), Karen Sutherland (Tom Fields) and grand children, Jake Palley, Emma Palley and Sam Andersen. She was preceeded in death by her husband Lou in 2009. We request any donations be made to your local Alzheimer's Association.
