Mary Kathleen Day
November 13, 1930 to October 24, 2023
Mary Kathleen Day, 92, passed away October 24 following a year in nursing care. Mary was born in Southampton, NY, the daughter of Irish immigrants, Margaret Jane (née Allen), and William George Gray, who sailed aboard the steamship Assyria to Ellis Island, NY in 1923.
Mary was predeceased by her beloved sister, Jean Hallock; brothers George and Bill Gray; niece Jill Deckman (née Hallock); nephews Corey Hallock and David A. Day; and by loving husband, David J. Day, who left her side in 2016. Mary is survived by daughter and grandson, Katherine and David Vollenweider; nephews Gary Hallock; Terry Day; and Bryan Day; nieces Sue Day-Perroots; Patty Paidas (née Day); Jamie Cherry-Sitek; and Janine Chidwick (née Cherry).
Throughout her life, Mary was a devoted member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a life member of Washington Park Chapter # 126, and Metro Chapter #157, where she held the office of Worthy Matron from 1991-92. She was looking forward to receiving her OES 75 Year Pin in December 2023.
Mary’s education was a lifelong journey-beginning in a one-room schoolhouse in Baiting Hollow, NY; graduating from Riverhead High School; attending St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Brooklyn to become a Registered Nurse. At 61,she re-entered Metropolitan State College for a Bachelors in Chemistry. Mary worked as a nurse in several Denver hospitals and brought compassion and care to countless patients. Mary was also a member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.O.E.) Chapter CK, in Denver.
Mary belonged to several churches successionally throughout her 66 years in Denver. In later years she served as Deacon at South Presbyterian Church, until the church was decommissioned. She then joined Trinity Methodist Church, and remained a member until passing. Mary loved singing in church choirs, organizing church social events and she served on many committees.
It would be remiss not to mention that Mary had many friends throughout Colorado and beyond with whom she formed lifelong bonds. She would send over 250 Christmas Cards with personal messages annually, long before social media made staying in touch much easier. In later years, when she was unlikely to attend meetings, her circle was much quieter, but still remained, until it too succumbed to time.
We invite you all to celebrate Mary’s life with us. Services are to be held on November 14th at Horan & McConaty on 11150 E. Dartmouth Avenue in Aurora. Viewing is scheduled for 9:30 am, services at 10:30 am, followed by a reception from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. Interment will be at Ft. Logan National Cemetery at 2:00 pm alongside her eternal partner, David J. Day.
Donations may be made to one of Mary’s favorite places or a charity of your choice.
