Mary McCoy Howey, 77, of Centennial, passed Thursday April 17 from complications following a fall last November. She was born to the late F.W. McCoy and Dorothy Richardson, September 26, 1936, in Pueblo, CO. Mary graduated from Kent School in 1954, and from CU Boulder, with an English degree, in 1958, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. That same year she married Robert Howey of Lincoln, NE, where they lived for years she would treasure throughout her life. In 1976, they moved to Cherry Hills Village, CO. Mary was a loving daughter, mom, grandmother and 'adopted' mom. She served and served and served, to the extent of 38, 000 family meals, 10, 000 diaper changes, many, many non-profit fundraising and program events, and more soccer games, recitals and graduations than one should be allowed to inflict upon oneself. She brought learning, culture, broadening experiences and fun to her whole family. She showed grace upon grace to extended family and countless friends, and hosted numerous young people for stays of months and years in her home. She loved scripture, literature, history, travel, and - more than all - people. She liked ""just a fruit juice glass"" of your beverage, favored coffee-flavored anything, read Dostoevsky and St. Theresa of Avila, and was known to serve - in addition to amazing breads, homemade ice cream and great meals - sardine, peanut butter and mayonnaise, or cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches. She drove questionably, loved prodigiously. Mary was a pray-er. Having been healed of cancer in 1987, she supported and prayed for healing for many in the years that followed. She met regularly to pray with her prayer group and with the local gathering of the Evangelical Sisterhood of Mary, prayed regularly with various urban non-profits through the years, and prayed daily with husband Bob, from day one of their marriage. She cared deeply for the poor and dispossessed. She was on the Board of Denver Leadership Foundation, Hope Communities, and Downing Street Foundation, and served and supported several other Denver non-profits. She was a founding member of Cherry Hills Community Church, and a member of the Grand Lake Yacht Club and the Colorado Arlberg Club. Her last four and ½ months were spent in a hospital bed, where she fought hard for rehabilitation and resisted attention, but for the first time in her life just had to be still and be loved on. She is dancing now and is survived by a fond and grateful family: her loving husband Robert, son Robert (Carolyn) Howey; daughter Amy (Bill) Pierson; son James (Marcy) Howey; six much-loved and richly-blessed grandchildren: Reid, Whitney, Haley, Bryan, Robert and Matthew; and nephews Doug, Robert and David Hord, and niece Mimi Meisters. ""Her children and grandchildren rise up to bless her⦠her husband says, 'You excel them all.'"" Prov. 31 Memorial services will be Friday, April 25, at 2:00p.m., at Highline Community Church 3651 S. Colorado Blvd Cherry Hills Village, CO 80113. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mary Howey Memorial Account, 1st Bank, Holly Branch, 8200 S.
