Mary Darlene (Jordan) Gibson, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, accomplished writer, and lifelong Colorado resident, passed away on October 3, 2026. She was born in Denver on June 27, 1937, to Julian Jordan and Mildred Jordan.
Mary graduated from South High School in 1955, where she met her high school sweetheart, Donald Gibson. The two were married on June 15, 1957, beginning a loving partnership filled with family, adventure, and shared experiences, celebrating 62 years of marriage. Mary continued her education at the University of Colorado Boulder, earning a degree in journalism in 1960.
A gifted communicator and award-winning author, Mary built an impressive career in communications. Her professional journey included work with the American Humane Society, the American Optometric Association, and the Catholic Archdiocese of Denver. She later founded Mary Gibson Communications, a successful woman-owned business.
Mary was also politically engaged and ran for the Colorado State Legislature in 1978, reflecting her lifelong interest in public affairs and the world around her.
Although Mary achieved much professionally, family remained at the heart of her life. She treasured gatherings at the family cabin near St. Mary’s Glacier, spirited games of 500 rummy, and vacations that created memories across generations. She especially loved Christmas and made the holiday unforgettable with family celebrations, prime rib, eggnog, and her tradition of taking each grandchild Christmas shopping.
Mary was an excellent bridge player whose friendships around the card table lasted more than 50 years. She was well read and enjoyed thoughtful conversations about books and current events. Education was deeply important to her, and she encouraged her family to remain curious, broaden their perspectives, and embrace new experiences. She proudly wore sweatshirts from each college that all eight of her grandchildren graduated from.
Together, Mary and Don traveled widely, visiting Europe, the Middle East, China, Africa, Mexico, Canada, Hawaii, Alaska, and the Caribbean. Mary enjoyed capturing their adventures through photography. She also cherished family trips, from camping vacation journeys through America’s National Parks to visits to Glenwood Springs and a special Hawaiian vacation celebrating her and Don’s 50th wedding anniversary.
Mary expressed her love through traditions both grand and simple. She was a wonderful cook, remembered especially for her homemade green chili, famous macaroni and cheese, and hot buttered popcorn. Her Catholic faith was an important and enduring part of her life.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Julian Jordan and Mildred Jordan, and her beloved husband, Donald “Don” Gibson. She is survived by her three daughters, Marilee Yorchak (John); Donna Lindel (Mark); and Laura Sherwin (Dave). She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Nick Yorchak, Amy Lindel (Theja), Alex Yorchak (Molli), Stephanie Vanek (Mike), Meredith Johnson (Jeff), Katie Siegal (Austin), Diane Sherwin (Micah), Andy Sherwin (Rachel); eight great-grandchildren: Zoey, Theo, Addison, Riley, Calvin, Henry, Lili, Hayden; her brother, Richard Jordan (MaryLee), as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Mary will be remembered for her intelligence, independence, curiosity, and deep devotion to those she loved. Her legacy lives on in the family traditions she created, the opportunities she encouraged, the stories she shared, and the generations she inspired.
