Mary M. Cunico

Mary Bond Muench Cunico passed away peacefully with her daughters by her side on February 17, 2024.

She was born on July 9, 1939 to Willard Muench and Alice Marie Bond in St. Louis, Missouri. The Muenches moved to DC in 1941 and then to Alexandria where Mary grew up.  She attended Mt Vernon Elementary and George Washington HS.  She was a Girl Scout and camped with her family. They in fact survived two hurricanes while camping that hit the Viginia coast. After 2 years at Roanoke College she studied 3 yrs at Washington Hospital Center and received her RN.  Subsequently she obtained her nurse anesthetist training at St Vincent DePaul in Norfolk.

On August 27, 1966 Mary married Robert James Cunico in Washington D.C. with his brother, Reverend John Cunico officiating the ceremony.   In their 55 years of marriage, they enjoyed raising their two daughters Cathy and Caren, traveling the globe, and spending time with family and friends. 

Mary began her nursing career as a nurse anesthetist   Once the family moved to Colorado in 1977, she took a break from nursing to serve as a teachers’ aide at Jewell Elementary where the girls attended.  She eventually returned to nursing working in the operating room at Aurora Community Hospital (what is today known as Medical Center of Aurora!).  While Bob was coaching the girls in their various sports, Mary was always right there to support.  She was also a Girl Scout leader.  She went on to finish out her nursing career at Midtown Surgical Center.  Mary enjoyed reading, traveling and her beloved Rockies! 

Survivors include Cathy Benton (Kevin) - Jessica, Noah and Caren Schaffner (Jack) - Brandon, Mason, and Dr. Jean Muench (sister).

Services to be held Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at 12pm at Heartlight Reception Center followed by a light reception.
