Margaret Frances Schofield

Margaret Frances Crowfoot was born on June 4, 1929, to George Arthur and Irene (Wind) Crowfoot, the first of their six children and the first of all the Wind grandchildren, a decidedly large clan that has lived and celebrated life together in the decades since. As the oldest and only girl, Margie spent much of her life caring for her brothers, Joe, Arthur, Jerry, and Larry, getting them out of scrapes and buying them sweets at the five-and-dime when she had a little money.

Margie graduated valedictorian from Wheat Ridge High School in 1947 and earned a full ride scholarship to the University of Wyoming but was unable to attend due to the cost of room and board. So, she stayed home in Edgewater, started work and accepted a blind double date with her friends, Billy and Annetta and Bill's friend, Leonard Schofield.

Despite telling him after the first date that she wasn't interested, Lenny persisted and they were engaged shortly thereafter, and married six months later, on a chilly January 18, 1948.

Margie and Lenny set up house and were gifted in short succession by Peggy in 1950, Kathy in 1952, Debbie in 1954 and Sherry in 1956. They purchased their forever home on Lowell Blvd. in 1958, and then were blessed (or perhaps surprised) in 1961 with Mike and again with Nancy in 1966.

The Schofield home was one of home-cooked meals, manners, and grace. Of shared bedrooms and hand-me-down clothes and working hard in school. Of Sunday church and family dinner afterward. It was playing in the yard and swimming with Dad when he got home from work. It was riding bikes and helping with the dishes and bedtime snacks. And Mom was the boss of all those things.

Margie was a great hostess, taking care that every guest, visiting boyfriend, and bridge club lady was welcomed and well fed. Holidays were especially important to Margie: decorating, baking, purchasing and wrapping gifts and being the creator and keeper of all the holiday secrets. She always opened her home to family at those times, and never thought twice about the chaos of trying to feed everyone a delicious meal around however many tables it took to fit us all in. She created so many wonderful memories for her children, her grandchildren, her parents, her brothers and their families as well, and will always be remembered for that.

Margie and Lenny were lovebirds their whole life together. They kissed and held hands and showed their kids what marriage is supposed to be like. There was undoubted mutual respect, compromise, and unfailing love in each day they had together. Shortly after marking 50 years of marriage, Lenny developed cancer, and Margie cared for him every step of the way until his death in October 1998. Stoic and brave, she went on without him for another 25 years.

Margie was an avid traveler, visiting many European countries, China, Egypt, all fifty of the United States and even going on African safari in her 80s. She was a total bookworm, reading multiple books a week and introducing all her kids to a love of the library. She loved to bake and to garden, caring lovingly for her home until she was forced to leave it in the middle of a pandemic when she could no longer care for herself.

Margie passed away from life on July 4, 2024. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Schofield, her daughter Peggy (Jim) Buck, her grandson Michael Buck, her great-grandson Kayne Stoute, her parents, George and Irene Crowfoot, and her brothers, Joe, Jerry, and Larry Crowfoot. She is survived by her brother, Arthur Crowfoot, sisters-in-law, Shirley and Sue Crowfoot, and her children, Kathy (Peter) Messina, Debbie (Kevin) Sweeney, Sherry Schofield, Mike (Tammy) Schofield, and Nancy (Patrick) Montgomery, as well as 17 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

The matriarch of many, she will be missed by all.
