Margaret M. "Margie" Mahoney passed away peacefully at home on May 21, 2026, at the age of 95. She was born to Joseph G. Ratterman Sr. and Margaret A. (Curley) Ratterman at the U. S. Army Hospital, Ft. Sheridan, Illinois, on May 6, 1931.
Margie was a world traveler before she graduated high school as her father’s military assignments took them across the US and to Japan. She had the unique experience of graduating from Yokohama American High School in Japan (1949) where she made lifelong friendships and memories. Once settled back in Denver with her family of military veterans, an encounter with a young gentleman at a church festival would shape her entire life. Margie & Phil Mahoney soon married on September 2, 1950 at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Denver.
Though a little time was spent in California, the Denver area became home to the couple, and they committed to raising eight wonderful children mainly in a home Phil designed on Ingalls Street in Wheat Ridge. In that home filled with youthful energy and scraped knees, Margie guided her seven boys and one girl through all the highs and lows of growing to be amazing adults. From kid-assisted Christmas buffets, to lunches for everyone as they marched off to Sts. Peter & Paul school, to home cooked dinners for 10 at their huge round table, the nurturing environment was evident everywhere. She made all the children work weekly assignments to help run the house, which helped her find “her” time in which she did painting, music, reading and hosting a routine ladies’ card game.
How she and Phil managed to take the entire herd camping, fishing, hiking and horseback riding every year is beyond belief. They believed in giving their children growth opportunities; they even flew the pack from Denver to Wyoming to go camping and rented RV trailers to visit sites in Colorado and adjoining states.
Margie was the number one fan of her children’s sporting events, plays, musical shows and of course graduations. As young adults began to leave the Ingalls Street home, she found time to do accounting work and to be a matchmaker no less. And as grandchildren began arriving, Margie was ever the supportive helper as well as a loving grandmother nurturing the next generation.
Green Valley, Arizona became a seasonal stopping point for Phil & Margie as the warmth of snowless winters drew them there. Travel became a larger part of their year as their children started to spread across the US to Missouri, California, Texas, Wyoming, the Carolinas and more. Margie had a travel checklist – lipstick, money, hankie, & comb; with these you could travel anywhere. Even when not traveling, she loved to remain close with her growing legacy as she collected and shared any and every piece of family news. They eventually moved to a just-the-right-size house in Broomfield with a par-three golf course nearby.
With her experience in managing countless details, it was natural for her to coordinate monthly birthday celebrations as the numbers in every month grew rapidly with grandchildren and then great-grandchildren. She still enjoyed “her” time and filled it with walking, reading, attending mass and even maneuvering mass transit to enjoy theatre plays.
Margie helped tend to her aging mom with usually daily visits that included shopping and hair appointments, trying new restaurants and staying engaged with family and friends. Together they shopped for and sent out hundreds of cards and gifts every year celebrating birthdays, weddings and special events, offering love, sympathy and encouragement, and never forgetting to say thank you.
Phil & Margie were inseparable love birds and had more than 61 years together when Phil passed in January 2012. When the Broomfield home became too big, Margie moved to supportive communities, including one very near St. Dominic's on Federal Boulevard where she and Phil were married. When life presented the opportunity, she moved in with her youngest son Joe on the Colorado plains near Deer Trail. She still loved to read, do walks (mostly indoors), talk to the visiting deer, and watch that wonderful series Foyle's War. There was never a hair appointment she would turn down.
Margie remained a devout Catholic throughout her entire life, open to caring for each and every person no matter where they were. She firmly believed in prayer and is a shining example of "they will know we are Christians by our love."
Margie is preceded in death by her long-time spouse John Philip (Phil) Mahoney Jr.
She is survived by her brother, Joseph (Phyllis) Ratterman Jr. of Westminster, CO, and children Pat (Ann) of Englewood, CO; Mike (Carolyn) of Erie, CO; Paul (Gloria) of St. Louis, MO; John (Leiloni) of Richland, WA; Jim (Leah) of Rapid City, SD; Mary (John) Martinez of Arvada, CO; Tom (Mellisa) of Silverthorne, CO; Joe of Deer Trail, CO; and an overflowing of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and other loving nieces, nephews and friends.
