Major William W. Redmond III, USAF Retired, aged 84, went to be with the Lord on March 22, 2025. Bill was born December 29, 1940 in Lincoln, Nebraska to William W. and Elisabeth (Muth) Redmond II. He spent his youth in Washington, Kansas, and graduated from Lincoln Southeast High School in Lincoln, Nebraska.
He married Sharon L. Everett on September 6, 1958. While working at King’s Drive In, Bill attended the University of Nebraska and played 2nd base and shortstop for the University of Nebraska baseball team. He wore #9 to represent his baseball and war hero, Ted Williams. After being pursued by several MLB teams, Bill graduated in 1963 and joined the United States Air Force as a Radar Navigator on his beloved B-52. Bill completed three tours in Vietnam, flying in the Arc Light and Linebacker II campaigns. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, AF Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the AF Outstanding Unit Award.
Bill served as the Chief Intelligence Officer (Looking Glass) at Offutt AFB, NE; Chief of Bombing and Navigation at Wurtsmith AFB, MI where he earned his master’s degree from Central Michigan University. He then served as Deputy Chief-8th Air Force at Barksdale, AFB, LA, from which he retired in 1983 after 20 years of service. He worked for Martin-Marietta in Denver as Contract Administrator from 1983 to 1998. Bill was an exceptional golfer, playing at famous courses including St. Andrews, Scotland and Lahinch, Ireland, and winning many local tournaments. During his retirement he worked for Foothills Golf Course to “reduce his green fees”. He was an involved member of Faith Community Church in Littleton, Colorado where he held court in the sanctuary reviewing the sermon and critiquing the music, telling jokes to other churchgoers after the service with coffee in hand.
While Bill’s Air Force career took him all over the world, his favorite place was Michigan. He loved his Wurtsmith Air Force family and the memories he made salmon fishing, waterskiing, skating, snowmobiling, and boating. He maintained contact with many of the airmen he served with throughout his life. A University of Nebraska alum, he served as President of Coloradans for Nebraska, directing scholarship money to future UNL students. Bill was a long-suffering Boston sports fan and enjoyed witnessing the dynasty of Boston championships, especially his beloved Red Sox and Patriots.
If you were invited into the house, his sanctuary, you would often hear him bellow, “Sharon!” most commonly from his chair in the family room. From this chair, he would engage visitors in fascinating conversation, whether in person or over the phone. His house was often busy with family and friends celebrating holidays, birthdays, and just spending time. The carpet transformed into putting greens and driving ranges, the golf clubs never far from his reach. He deeply loved and valued his family, his source of great pride, and loved learning about, and celebrating his ancestral home of Wexford, Ireland.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Kelly Girtin. He leaves behind his wife of 66 years, Sharon L. Redmond; and five children, Cheryl L. Doyle, Littleton, Barbara A. Black, Bellevue, NE; Scott T. Redmond (Brandy), Lakewood, Wendy S. Rasmussen, Bossier City, LA, and Sarah K. Redmond, Castle Rock; his brothers, David LaFevre, Topeka, KS; and James LaFevre, Albuquerque, NM., 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
