Louise Dorothy Chavez, age 82, passed away in her home on May 14, 2026, surrounded by her family.
Dorothy was born in the San Luis Valley in 1943, the third of ten children with two sisters and seven brothers. She graduated from Denver West High School and soon began building what would become the center of her life, her family.
In 1962, along with her first husband Zeke DeLeon Jr., Dorothy welcomed her first child, Dolly and a year later their son Zeke III. In 1967, she married Pete Chavez, and together they had Caroline, Guy, and Crystal. Dorothy also opened her heart and home to James, whom she unofficially adopted and raised as her own son.
More than anything, Dorothy was a mother. She devoted her life to caring for others, creating a home filled with warmth, comfort, laughter, and unconditional love. After moving to Lakewood in 1975, she became known not only as a devoted mother to her own children, but as a mother figure to many throughout the community. Her door was always open, her kitchen was always full, and anyone who needed guidance, support, or simply to feel loved could find it with Dorothy.
Later, she returned to Denver, where she spent the final 36 years of her life. Her greatest pride and joy were her grandchildren and growing family. She was a grandmother to nine, great-grandmother to ten, and great-great-grandmother to one. The love, strength, generosity, and compassion she poured into others live on through each of them.
Dorothy is survived by her children Dolly, Zeke (Nancy), James, Caroline, Guy (Amy), and Crystal (Chris); her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her brother Eddy; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, dear friends, and countless people whose lives she touched as a second mother, confidante, and source of unwavering love.
