Leonard Johnson

September 14, 1932 — July 27, 2021

Leonard Isaac Johnson passed away suddenly at his home on July 27, 2021, at the age of 88. He was born to the late Harry and Jean (Warrell) Johnson in Defiance, Iowa on September 14, 1932. Leonard grew up in western Iowa with his five brothers and sister.  From a young age, he was a devoted Chicago Cubs baseball fan. He graduated from Manilla High school in 1950 and worked on the family farm until he enlisted in 1957 in the United States Marine Corps.  He trained at Camp Pendleton in California, and earned the rank of Corporal.  After his service, Leornard returned home and farmed his own land in Denison, Iowa.

In 1963, he decided to discover a new life, and he sold his farm, cattle and equipment and headed west to Colorado. He worked in electric supply sales for Hall Electric and Electric Supply Corporation until he retired in 1997. He met and fell in love with Martha 'Martina' McDonald while bowling in a local league. They married on January 2, 1971 and were blessed with three daughters. Leonard was a family man, and he was an amazing, involved father. He went on road trips to visit his siblings across the country, adored his nieces and nephews and loved being a grandpa. He never missed an opportunity to enjoy ice cream and popcorn with family and friends.

Living in Denver, he became an avid Bronco fan, and he was a season ticket holder for over fifty years. Leonard could fix anything, and he spent time on home improvement projects. He loved watching the Cubs on WGN, and working in his large garden full of sweet corn. He was a devout Catholic and enjoyed ushering at Saint Jude Catholic Church. Leonard had a strong work ethic and was a true gentleman. He always expressed kindness and loyalty to all he knew.

Leonard was preceded in death by his wife of over fifty years Martina; his parents; five brothers, Lawrence, Gerald, Leo, Robert, and Walter Johnson; his sister, Trudy Kirchner.  He is survived by his children, Carolyn Johnson-Dragoo and husband Jeff Dragoo, Kathleen Blasi and husband Christopher, Diane Jasulavic and husband Steven; his beloved grandchildren, Isaac Blasi, Laura and Jaidyn Dragoo, and Devon and Leah Jasulavic; his sister-in-law Mary Etta Johnson; numerous nieces and nephews.

His children would like to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support given to Leonard after the loss of Martina in March.
