Lawrence J. (Larry) Meyers was a charming, social man who remained a true people person until the end of his life. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1942, an only child who enjoyed camping and fishing trips with his parents. An interest in becoming a rancher or veterinarian led to two summers of work on dude ranches in Montana and Wyoming, wrangling horses and helping out with trail rides and cookouts. He loved the work so much that he decided to pursue a degree in agriculture.
Larry served in the US Army at Fort Campbell in the Quartermasters Division. After graduating from the University of Missouri, he eventually got his first sugar industry job in 1970. He continued working in industrial sugar sales for 40 years, over 30 of them at the Holly Sugar and Imperial/Holly Corporation, where he rose to the position of Director of Industrial Product Sales. His strong work ethic, deal-making skills, and friendly personality made him popular throughout the industry.
Larry was a fun dad who brought light-heartedness and adventure to his young daughters’ lives. He participated with them in father/daughter group activities, and took them on camping trips and family vacations.
He competed in the Triple Crown of Running in 1986, which included the Pikes Peak Ascent, a 13.3-mile long trail race to the top of Pikes Peak which he successfully finished through sheer determination and despite altitude sickness.
Larry was a devout Catholic with a sense of social justice. He worked in his parish’s food pantry and brought the eucharist to homebound parishioners.
He loved traveling, hiking, and walking with his dogs.
Larry died from complications due to Alzheimer’s disease. He was predeceased by his parents Edna and Daniel Meyers, and his wife of 55 years, Mary Ann Meyers. He is survived by his daughters Karen Meyers and Anne Meyers, their partners Andy Drasiewski and Curt Rudnik, and granddaughter Leah Meyers-Rudnik.
