Kit Elaine Vermilyea

April 19, 1939 — June 7, 2025

Kit Elaine Vermilyea, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on April 19, 1939, in Austin, Minnesota, Kit graduated from Austin High School in 1955. In December of 1959, she married the love of her life, Dale “Skip” Vermilyea, in Denver, Colorado, where they built a life rooted in love, laughter, and family.

Kit was known above all else for her unwavering devotion to her family. She gave selflessly of her time and heart, always putting others first. Her generous spirit extended beyond her loved ones — she was passionate about charitable giving.

A true animal lover, Kit was often the trusted caregiver for the beloved pets of friends and family while they traveled — a task she embraced with joy and compassion. Her love for animals inspired her support of causes close to her heart, including Humane

Colorado and many other animal rescues. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family kindly requests donations be made in Kit’s memory to Humane Colorado or Best Friends Save them all — a tribute befitting her lifelong love for animals and generous spirit.

Kit’s zest for life was evident in her many interests. She was an avid reader, a talented painter, and had a lifelong appreciation for arts and crafts. Her adventurous spirit took her across all 50 states and five continents, leaving her with countless stories and cherished memories from around the globe.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Dale “Skip” Vermilyea; her parents, Ken and Myrtle Johnson; and her sister, Betty Johnson, all of Austin, MN.

Kit’s legacy lives on through her devoted children, Cheryl Macosko and Brad Vermilyea, both of Denver, CO; her adored grandchildren, Cally (Lincoln) Macosko-Jones, Shelby (Brandon) Vermilyea Gustafson, and Austin Vermilyea, all of Denver, CO. Her life was a gift to those who knew her, and her kindness and warmth will be deeply missed.
