Kevin Andrew Biehl

March 13, 1980 — April 20, 2025

Kevin Andrew Biehl passed away in Colorado on April 20th, 2025, at the age of 45. Kevin was born in the middle of a snowstorm on March 13th, 1980, at Saint Barnabas Hospital in Livingston, NJ to Robert Smith and Janet Biehl (nee Myers). Kevin lived with his maternal grandparents, Sydney and Shirley Madin in his early years. Later, Kevin returned the favor as a key caregiver for them in their last years. He loved his grandparents deeply. Kevin loved sports as a child, especially baseball, and he excelled at them.

Kevin graduated from Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, FL in 1998 and was a proud member of the Windermere Boat Club (a rowing club). It was through the Dr. Phillips High School magnet program in international studies that Kevin’s love of the United Nations and international politics was born. Kevin excelled in academics and graduated summa cum laude from Boston University with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations in 2002. In Boston, Kevin developed a deep love of New England sports and Tom Brady. He admired Tom Brady’s relentless pursuit of excellence, strong work ethic, and belief in the power of team success; values Kevin also demonstrated in his own life. Kevin was fortunate enough to meet Tom Brady in person briefly in Shanghai. Kevin had an ongoing playful rivalry with his father and sisters who root for the Yankees, sending a broom back and forth when either the Red Sox or the Yankees swept the other. Kevin loved fantasy football, and his wife’s family appreciated his enthusiasm and leadership of the family fantasy football league.

Kevin lived, worked and travelled all over the world in his 45 years. He was adaptable and very good at learning new languages, able to become truly immersed in and a part of whatever culture he was in. He studied abroad in England, taught English in Japan, interned in the United Nations Ethics Office in New York City, and worked on projects for the United Nations in West Africa. He earned a Master of International Affairs from the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs in 2010. It was at Columbia University that he met his one true love, Caitlin, during orientation. Their love story developed slowly over time. Their first “sort of” date in the West Village ended when a shy Caitlin decided Arthur’s Tavern was a bit too loud and, in Kevin’s words, “ran away” into the Christopher St subway station. The two remained friends in the years that followed, and God brought them back together in Washington, D.C. in 2013 where Kevin arrived an hour early to their first meet-up in Chinatown to calm his nerves. They went on to enjoy several blissful months exploring D.C. together before moving to California in 2014.

Kevin loved Disney, having spent many formative years growing up in Orlando. He worked at Walt Disney World as a teenager in food service and as a lifeguard and later managed security operations across all of the Walt Disney World property resorts when he moved back to Orlando in 2010 to be a primary caregiver for his grandparents. During that time, he got to live right across the street from his sister, Christina, near Lake Eola, where he could run over to help her get rid of tropical bugs when she needed his help. The two shared a love of the television show How I Met Your Mother and attended the Neil Patrick Harris Candlelight Processional in EPCOT together, where Kevin wore Barney’s famous ducky tie and got a nod from Neil Patrick Harris himself. A fond memory Christina will never forget.

Kevin worked on the public policy team at Airbnb during its high growth start-up years and traveled around the world, particularly all over Asia as the Mobilization Manager for the APAC region. At one point, Kevin and Caitlin spent a month in Singapore discerning whether or not they would move there. They decided to stay in the States but had hoped to potentially live in Singapore for a time with their children when they got a bit older. Kevin had a big impact at Airbnb and received multiple promotions over a short amount of time. He was known for his work ethic, but even more importantly, for his character. Countless Airbnb colleagues across the globe described that he was the heart and soul of teams he was on - motivating, mentoring, looking out for others, and always grounding in the larger mission. Kevin’s colleagues there and across his other professional experiences in public policy, community service, and civic engagement felt he embodied values of empathy and service and that their lives and the lives of many others were made better by knowing him. Kevin was proud to have contributed to the re-election of President Barack Obama in 2012 as an organizer in Central Florida and to have run his own local campaign aimed at bridging party divides as an Independent for the local Colorado House District 37 in 2024.

Kevin and Caitlin were married in 2017 in the little town of Lanesboro, Minnesota at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the same church where both Caitlin’s maternal grandparents and her parents had been married. Kevin chose the Ben Folds song “The Luckiest” for their wedding processional. Kevin felt and loved deeply, and Caitlin is forever honored to have received that love. They welcomed their first child, Grace Shirley, in California and embarked on a memorable road trip across the West and Midwest to move to Colorado that same year. Kevin and Caitlin welcomed two more children in Colorado, Thomas Sydney and Claire Hope.

Kevin adored his children. He described each one as the greatest gifts ever given to him and Caitlin. He savored every milestone. He loved planning and sharing holidays and his love of travel and adventure and seeing the world through their innocent and purely joyful eyes. Kevin loved the water and loved swimming with his children, often playing a “Baloo” game with them in which they would lay on his stomach while he sang The Bare Necessities. He loved sharing all ball sports with them in the yard, at the park and at the gym and looked forward to cheering and coaching team sports when they got old enough. Kevin also had an artistic soul and looked forward to taking piano lessons with Grace and guitar lessons with Thomas, and to supporting Claire in her budding interest in art.

Kevin was also a beloved brother and uncle. He encouraged his brother, Daniel, to move to Colorado when he, Caitlin, and Grace moved there in 2019 and the two of them enjoyed landscaping, holiday decorating and sharing their love of Star Wars when Daniel lived with Kevin, Caitlin and Grace for two years and during the pandemic. Kevin was thrilled to become an uncle for the first time to his sister Natalie’s oldest son, Cooper, and later to triplets Hudson, Raegan and Parker. Kevin is Parker’s godfather, and he will watch over her from Heaven. Kevin was thrilled to meet his youngest niece, Madeline, on a family trip to Disney World bringing most of the cousins together in 2023. Kevin was so grateful for each of his siblings and for the friendships he shared with them.

Kevin is survived by his wife, Caitlin and his children Grace (6), Thomas (3), and Claire (2); his father and stepmother Robert and Jennifer Smith (Vernon, NJ); his brother Daniel Biehl and partner Vince Thao (Bellevue, WA); his sister Natalie and her husband David Vitone (Sparta, NJ); his sister Christina and her husband Patrick Grozinger (Orlando, FL); and his in-laws Thomas Fitzpatrick and Jennifer Johnson (Anoka, MN) and sister-in-law Megan Fitzpatrick (Boston, MA); as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; and friends who were as close as family.

Through experiences of tragedy and through his wife, Caitlin, Kevin became a man of God. Kevin and Caitlin had recently finally found a church home in Colorado at Grace Presbyterian Church in Highlands Ranch. Kevin was looking forward to becoming a leader in the church community and to leading, guiding and serving others in that capacity. Kevin often turned to Psalm 23 as a source of strength and discernment.

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
