Kay S. Skinner of Lakewood, Colorado passed away on January 27, 2025 at the age of 85. Loving mother, sister and friend.
Kay Swoboda Skinner was born in Norfolk, Nebraska, in the spring of 1939 to Forrest and Iryl Swoboda. She was their 2nd of four children including Craig and Richard (both deceased) and her surviving sister, Betty Whitwer. In 1957, she was crowned Miss Norfolk and competed in the Miss Nebraska pageant. She graduated from the University of Nebraska, Class of 1961 and was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. The following year, she worked as a Legislative Assistant for Senator Gale McGee (D – Wyoming) in Washington D.C. which fueled her life-long interest in politics and the workings of the U.S. Government.
In 1963, she married Richard Farner, also of Norfolk, Nebraska, and moved to Denver, Colorado, so he could attend law school. They had two children which survive her including Eric Farner and Kristin Treptow. Kay is survived by her daughter-in-law, LeeAnn Farner and grandson John (Jack) Farner and son-in-law Richard (Rick) Treptow. Kay and Richard divorced in 1974.
In 1977, Kay married John (Jack) Skinner and welcomed his children, Kelli Vlahos and John (Chip) Skinner (deceased) into the new family. Kay is also survived by Kelli’s children Demitria and Nick Vlahos. Jack Skinner passed away in 1998. She earned her real estate license and had a very successful career as a real estate broker in the Denver area.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at 2pm at the Horan & McConaty Family Chapel at 3101 S. Wadsworth Blvd, Lakewood, Colorado. A Gathering of Family and Friends will follow from 4-7pm at Simms Steakhouse at 11911 W. 6th Ave., Lakewood, CO 80401.
