Joseph Talbott Mattson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2025, at his home, surrounded by family. He was 91.
Born on December 13, 1933, in Asheville, North Carolina, to Vernon and Carribelle Mattson, Joe lived a full and adventurous life. He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Jean A. Mattson; his daughter Patricia Davies-Nell and her husband, John Nell; and his son Charles Mattson; and his step- daughter Julia Marshall; He was preceded in death by his step-daughter Karen Camara, who is survived by her husband, Ken Camara. Joe and Jean were also blessed with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy.
Joe earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Colorado and went on to enjoy a long and distinguished career in the field. His work took him across the country and around the globe, with projects spanning Colorado, California, Utah, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Alberta, Kazakhstan, New Caledonia, and beyond.
A true outdoorsman at heart, Joe had a passion for nature and adventure. He loved hiking, fishing, spelunking, camping, and off-roading. Together with Jean, he traveled extensively, often with their Airstream trailer in tow. Their journeys were many, their stories unforgettable, and their shared love for exploration enduring. Joe was rarely without a Yellow Labrador by his side—most recently, his faithful dog Rose, who remained with him until his final moments.
A funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis Cabrini Parish, located at 6673 W. Chatfield Ave, Littleton, CO. Following the service, friends and family are invited to an open house at the Mattson home from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. Directions will be provided at the church.
Joe will be remembered for his curiosity, kindness, quiet strength, and the deep love he held for his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
