Joseph E. Leta Jr., of Thornton, Colorado, passed away suddenly on December 7, 2025, at the age of 63. His unexpected loss has brought deep sorrow to his family and to all who knew and loved him.
Joseph was born on December 4, 1962, the beloved son of Shirley Leta and the late Joseph E. Leta. He grew up with a gentle spirit, a curious mind, and a quiet strength that carried throughout his life.
Joe was a graduate of Evergreen High School and later attended Western State University in Gunnison, Colorado. His years in Evergreen and Gunnison shaped friendships and experiences he held dear.
Joe possessed a natural athletic ability, and whatever sport he tried, he excelled. He enjoyed golfing and proudly celebrated a hole-in-one. He was an intuitive tennis player, earning the nickname “Smokin’ Joe” for a serve that few could return. Recently, he spoke enthusiastically about taking up pickleball, always eager to embrace a new challenge and stay active.
Joe’s heart matched his talent—his generosity was known to everyone who crossed his path. As his friend Dudley Mitchell fondly said, “He would give you the shirt off his back, even if he didn’t have a shirt.” Joe’s kindness, willingness to help, and steady loyalty made him someone people naturally relied on.
He was also a championship bowler, competing as a member of the United States Bowling Congress and traveling to tournaments where he won several national championships. Joe was a proud member of the Northglenn Elks Club, where he was active both socially and as a bowler.
Joe found great joy in the shooting sports. He excelled in both trap and sporting clays, pursuits that gave him a sense of accomplishment and a drive to excel. He was a proud member of both the Colorado State Trapshooting Association and the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA), and he was a past championship winner. Those who shot beside him will remember his steady aim, his controlled rhythm, and the quiet confidence he brought to every round.
Joe’s greatest passion was discovering the pleasures of the outdoors, a love passed down through the influence of his father and his grandfather, Joe Hairhoger of Pennsylvania. He was an avid big-game hunter, serving as a trusted guide on many elk hunts in the Colorado high country. Joe was also a devoted sportsman on the water—just as happy casting a line on a warm summer day as he was drilling a hole in the ice and fishing through the deep chill of winter. The wilderness was where Joe felt most himself, connected to family, tradition, and the quiet beauty of the natural world.
He is survived by his devoted mother, Shirley Leta; his siblings, Lisa Leta and Christopher Leta, all of Evergreen; and his niece, Lacy Rosztoczy, and her husband, Ryan, who held a special place in his heart.
The family wishes to offer a special remembrance to Kim Montgomery, whose friendship and connection with Joe meant so much to him. They also extend heartfelt thanks to Dudley Mitchell, Tim Yost, Darrell Farr, and Doug Baker for their kindness, support, and loyal friendship. Their presence in Joe’s life brought comfort, companionship, and many meaningful moments that will never be forgotten.
Joe will be remembered for his kindness, his loyalty, his understated humor, and the love he had for his family. Though his time was far too short, the memories he leaves behind will remain a source of comfort to all who knew him.
