IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jose G.
Varelas
December 23, 1929 – January 21, 2026
José Guadalupe Varelas Núñez, age 96, passed away peacefully at St. Anthony’s North Health Pavilion in Westminster, CO, on January 21, 2026.
Mr. Varelas was born in Durango, Mexico, as the youngest of five children. Tragically, he lost his mother when he was only 1 year old. In the mid-1950s, he met the love of his life, Rufina, and it was love at first sight. Their wedding celebration lasted an entire week, and their marriage endured for over 60 years.
In his mid-30s, José moved to Thornton, CO, with the goal of building a better future for his family. One of his proudest achievements was becoming a U.S. citizen, a milestone that demonstrated his determination and resilience. He was an inspiring example of perseverance, striving tirelessly to overcome challenges and provide a better life for his loved ones. Though not wealthy in material possessions, he gave his family an abundance of love and unity.
José worked for approximately 40 years at Welby Gardens before retiring. He was known for his incredible work ethic and led both his work teams and his family by example. His legacy of hard work, love, and dedication will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew him.
He is survived by his nine children and their spouses: Maria G. Perez, Juan M. Varela, Yolanda Varela, Catalina Emerson, Roberto Varela, Jose Varela, Ignacio Varela, Alfredo Varela, Martha Alicia Wilkinson. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and many other family members and friends.
José was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rufina Varela, and his grandson, Andres Varela.
