John Richard Portman

John Richard Portman of Lakewood Colorado passed away peacefully after a short illness on July 31, 2025 at the age of 90. Internment was held in the Golden Colorado cemetery on August 12, 2025. He was born September 13, 1934 in California, the oldest son of John and Eloise Portman. His wife, Leah M. Portman, died in 2021 after 62 years of marriage.

John served in the Pacific for the US Navy during the Korean War. His employment later took him into many countries around the globe. He was an avid camper and traveled across the states in his trailer, stopping at scenic campgrounds to enjoy—first with his wife and family, and later with friends who shared his interests. He was a loyal Colorado Buffalos fan, supporting his alma mater by wearing his CU beanie hat for every game.

John participated faithfully in the leadership, teaching and music at Lakewood Bible Chapel for many years. He contributed his time and experience on behalf of Set Free Prison Ministries, Family Life Services of Colorado Springs, and Camp Elim of Woodland Park, Colorado.

He is survived by his son John D. Portman of Littleton Colorado and daughter Amelia Terry of Cape Coral, Florida, four grandchildren and five siblings: Sarah (John) Pine of Altoona, Pennsylvania, Joel Portman of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Pauline (John) Dickinson of San Diego, California, Johanna (Arnott) Gray of Seattle, Washington, Lois (Reuben) Hale of Omak, Washington, and 10 nieces and nephews.

He was a friend to many and loved by all. Remembrances may be sent to Camp Elim, Family Life Services or Emmaus University in Dubuque, Iowa.
