John James Hinton

John James Hinton, 73, of Lakewood, Colorado, went to be with the Lord on July 3, 2025, while doing something he loved — attending a Colorado Rockies game.

John was born on July 20, 1951, at Porter Hospital in Denver, Colorado, and grew up in Englewood as the youngest of four children. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged after two years of service. Remarkably, John and all of his siblings served their country in the armed forces, both Navy and Army.

By trade, John was a plumber and later worked as a building inspector for Adams County. He was a devoted caretaker and companion to his beloved life partner, Sandy, and spent his days enjoying simple pleasures: metal detecting for hidden treasures and fishing at any lake he could find.

John cherished his nieces and their children as his own and took immense pride in their accomplishments. He was especially proud of being left-handed — a trait that earned him the affectionate nickname “Lefty” from his brother.

John is survived by his loving life partner, Sondra (Sandy) Shafer; his niece, Carrie Gumber (Dan) and her children, Christina, Colton, and Brandon Kirkutis; and his niece, Cheryl Goldberg (Ross) and their children, Traver and Spencer. He also leaves behind his faithful dog, Cody, and cat, McDuff.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Viola Hinton, and his siblings: Leroy Henry Hinton Jr. (Donna), Dennis Hinton, and Mary Hinton.

John will be laid to rest at Fort Logan National Cemetery on July 28th. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Phillips United Methodist Church in Lakewood.
