Joan McCollough Walter, age 83, passed away peacefully in the arms of her husband in Highlands Ranch, CO, on May 20th, 2026. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Richard, two sons, Andrew and James, two daughters-in-law, Laura and Julie, and five grandchildren – Jack, Alex, Bryn, Lucas and Avery. She is also survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews.
She met her husband in her freshman year at Syracuse University. She was a member of the Tri-Delta Sorority during her time at Syracuse. In 1964 she graduated from Syracuse and then completed her master’s degree in computer science at Nova University in Ft Lauderdale after raising her 2 boys. Joan was a remarkable woman of fierce intelligence, determination and faith and was known for her kind heart and willingness to help anyone in need. She was an integral part of 2 faith communities - St Maurice Catholic Church in Hollywood, FL where she helped run the Hunger Program which founded the Daily Bread Community Food Bank (the first food bank in Florida) and Holy Name Catholic Church in Wayzata, MN. After retirement, she and Richard traveled the globe on multiple cruises and the country in their beloved 5th wheel - where they spent cherished time with their bicoastal sons and grandchildren. After “retiring” from traveling, she and Richard settled in Wind Crest in Highlands Ranch, CO where they found peace and tranquility in this lovely community and faith at Pax Christi Church. Her amazing life was cut short after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer and has left a hole in all our hearts which will be impossible to fill.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at Pax Christi Catholic Church in Lone Tree, CO on Tuesday, June 23 at 10AM.
In lieu of flowers or cards, please consider a donation in Joan’s honor to your local food bank or to PanCan —a charity dedicated to improved treatments and quality of life for those afflicted with this terrible disease.
