Joan Pike of Parker, Colorado, passed away peacefully on October 2,
2021.
She had just turned 90 on June 18th and was able to celebrate with friends and family at Denver Botanic Gardens. She proudly wore her sparkly “90” tiara and loved all of the birthday wishes that came her way! She was the most excited about all of the over 100 beautiful birthday cards she received from all over the country from people she had known
throughout her life.
Joan was born Nancy “Joan” Goodwin in Lumberton, North Carolina on June 18, 1931 to Nell and Harley Goodwin. Joan was the oldest of two
girls. On October 25,1953 she married the love of her life, Kenneth J. Pike, “ the most handsome man she had ever seen” and then moved to High Point, North Carolina. There she worked as an Administrative Assistant for JC Penney.
Ken and Joan had two children, Roseanne and Kenneth Jr., before moving to Los Angeles, California.
She continued to work as an administrative assistant until both children were grown. Then, in her 50s she went back to school to earn her AA degree in Early Childhood Education. She taught preschool and then went on to open her own Christian preschool in California.
Sadly in 1993 she lost Kenneth to a heart attack. He was only 62. She then moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to be near Roseanne and Randy, her son-in-love. There she taught pre-school at Del Norte Baptist Preschool. In 1999 she moved to Parker, Colorado after Randy and Roseanne relocated. She continued her pre-school career in Parker mostly at SE Christian Pre-school from which she retired at age 82.
Joan loved teaching and being with 4 and 5 year olds. She often ran into current and former students when she was out and about. Hearing “Hi Miss Joan” was music to her ears.
When not teaching she loved reading and going to the library, attending Ladies’ Bible studies, singing with her church group and her little
Pomeranian Milo.
Most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends whom she loved very much. She never met a stranger and was warm and gracious to everyone she met. In these last months Roseanne often heard from nurses and caregivers, “we just love your mother.”
Joan was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kenneth and her grandson Matthew Pennington, as well as her mother Nell and step-father Frank Papero. her father, Harley Goodwin, and her sweet “baby” sister Faye Jarman.’’
