It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Janice “Jan” M. Hornbuckle, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Jan was surrounded by her loving family throughout a long and courageous health battle including her final breaths at home on July 29th, 2026.

Born on June 20th, 1949, in Rock Island, Illinois, to Lawrence and Dorothy Wilde, she led a life full of family and adventure. She married the love of her life, Frank Hornbuckle, on January 3rd, 1970, and the two of them raised a beautiful family. Her home was a warm and lively place, raising children across generations for 47 years, alongside 2 beloved dogs, Shadow and Jet.

In addition to her family, Jan’s passions included the outdoors: gardening, camping, hiking, boating, and fishing, and several trips backpacking across the mountains of Colorado and the prairies of Iowa. Music was a major influence in Jan’s life; she attended many concerts and performed in a band at various venues, including bringing many smiles to nursing home residents. Jan loved sports, particularly Iowa Hawkeyes basketball, also rooting for the Chicago Bears and the Denver Broncos. She played volleyball and was such an avid swimmer at Bettendorf Rec that she was given the nickname “Flipper.”

Jan and Frank moved from Iowa to Colorado in 2017 to be closer to family and the mountains. She will be laid to rest at Broomfield Commons Cemetery in Colorado under a view of the mountains she loved exploring.

Jan was preceded in death by her daughter Marie (Rick) Sage, her parents Lawrence and Dorothy, and her sister, Dolores Bivens.  May they rest in peace.

She is survived by her loving husband Frank, daughters (Colorado) Sarah Hornbuckle, Teresa Hornbuckle (Trevor Gallegos), grandsons (Colorado) Dominic (Emma) Freeman, Joseph (Brandon) Milroy, granddaughters (Illinois) Elizabeth (Quinton) Evans (Eian, Sage, Eleanor), Melissa Sage, Alexis Sage, siblings Donna Key, Jerri Mapes, Barb Wilde, and John (Vicki Garrison) Wilde.

An intimate memorial gathering will be held for the immediate family. Special thank you to Elevation Hospice and her family physician, Dr. Robin Smith.

One of Jan’s favorite stories to tell was about fishing. She held the family record for the largest bass caught, as she liked to remind us, “and I caught it on a dead minnow."
