Janet Louise Burton Rego, a devoted mother, passionate educator, and lover of the outdoors, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on October 17, 2025 at the age of 72.
Born on September 29, 1953 in Duquesne, PA, Jan dedicated her life to learning, teaching, and nurturing others. Those who knew Jan will remember her expressive eyes and laughter, her generosity, and her ability to bring out the best in everyone around her. She had a gift for making the ordinary feel extraordinary, and for reminding others to savor life’s simple moments — a delicious bite of mashed potatoes, a hug from her grandchildren, or a summit view. Jan found joy and strength in nature. An avid runner and hiker, she completed 31 marathons and twice ran the JFK 50-miler.
Jan is survived by her husband, Jack Rego; her children, Laurel Wentz, Jeff Tomko, Tim Rego, Liz Pesce, Jen Brown, and John Rego; her 15 grandchildren; and a wide circle of family, friends, colleagues, and former students who will continue to carry her spirit and love in their hearts.
A celebration of Janet’s life will be held on Friday, October 24th at 1 pm at Horan and McConaty, 11150 E Dartmouth Ave, Aurora, CO, 80014. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to Advent Health Hospice Care in Porter (rmahf.org), who cared for her in final days.
Her life was a testament to compassion, perseverance, and joy—a reminder to keep giving, keep moving, and keep dancing.
