It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James (Jim) Michael Britton, 75, in Lakewood, Colorado, September 3, 2026. Jim was born on March 10,1951 to James John Britton and Illeana Trevors and he grew up in Denver, Colorado. As a child, his family moved a lot but when Jim was in the 8th grade his parents settled in one home for an extended period of time. In 1969 Jim graduated from Lincoln High School.
In 1970 he married Carol Sheely. They had three children, Jennifer, Mykie Jo ( passed 2 weeks after birth) and Jeff. During this time, Jim served in the Marines Corps and worked at Martin Marietta. In January, 1973 he joined the Denver Police and, he was with the police force for 41 years until retirement in 2014, as a highly decorated officer. In 2009, Jim was injured in a work-related accident which, eventually, caused him to lose his leg in 2018. District officers knew they could always depend on Jim because he was always willing to take every accident call he could. Off duty, he loved working Bronco games, Rocky games and concerts.
In 1975, Carol passed away leaving him with two small children. In 1976 he met Janet Hein and, in June 1978 they were married in Marion, Kansas in the United Methodist Church. One more addition to the family, Jared Michael, was born in1980. Jim and Jan celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary in June of this year.
Jim accepted the Lord in December, 1976. He loved being active in the church in every capacity and was often called to help people when they were moving, serving in Sunday school, community outreach programs and helping with funerals.
Jim's biggest hobby was sports. His first love was golfing, but he really enjoyed watching football, baseball and many other sports. Being an avid fan of football and baseball , he kept statistics on every NFL player as well as the NLB players. While he and Jan were on a bowling league, he was very proud when he bowled a 300. He was, also, very involved with his kids’ sports and school activities.
Jim and Jan loved traveling and went on a number of cruises. He enjoyed time spent with Jan's family in Kansas; having many weiner roasts in the pasture, as well as, homemade ice cream and many wonderful family dinners. He especially loved spending time with family and grandkids. His first love was the Lord and family always came in second for him. He was a fierce protector of family and making sure his kids had everything they needed. He never complained, even when his foot became too painful to walk on. After several surgeries and several medical appointments, when the doctor told him it was finally time to take his leg, he just responded with "How soon can you do it?"
Jim leaves behind his wife Jan, his kids, Jenni Josselyn, Jared and Jeff, his sister Deborah May (Greg,) his son-in-law, David, nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service honoring him will be held September 25, 2026, 3:30 pm at the SouthWest Community Church in Lakewood, Co. We welcome all who knew Jim or the family to share this celebration of life with us.
