Obituary

Herma Faye Hughes passed peacefully from this life unto glory October 12, 2026 at her home in Denver, Colorado.

Herma was born May 17, 1947 in Bloomfield, Indiana to Herman and Lily Faye Whitman. She graduated with a mathematics degree from Indiana University. On August 1, 1970 she married Jerry Hughes, a lifelong high school science teacher. Over the next 31 years, they built a home and family in Denver, including 4 children. Her children were the most important part of her life. She was deeply proud of each of them.

Herma and Jerry were founding members of the Rocky Mountain Christian Schools. Herma used her math degree at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, and later served in the Denver public schools teaching middle school. Herma was a 60+ year member of the University Church of Christ. For 10 years, she completed her career as the church secretary.

Herma loved to quilt, collect art, travel around the world, and sing in several choruses. She volunteered for years at nursing homes teaching cardmaking and papercrafts. Devoted Broncos fans, Herma and Jerry spent many frigid Sunday afternoons in the nosebleed section of Mile High Stadium.

Herma is preceded in death by her father, Herman Whitman, her mother, Lily Faye Whitman, her brother, Richie Whitman, her husband, Jerry Hughes, her daughter and son-in-law, Shelley and Mike Keller.

Herma is survived by her brother, Joe Whitman, her children: Cheryl and husband Jon Clark, Shane and wife Natalie (Hedges) Hughes, Chad and wife Emily (Short) Hughes, and grandchildren Justin, Jade and Geoffrey Clark, Daniel and Violet Hughes, Elliot, Micah and Deacon Hughes, many nieces and nephews and dearly loved friends. She will be greatly missed and deeply loved by her family, her friends and all who knew her.

A visitation (9-10 AM) and funeral (10 AM) will be held at the University Church of Christ (2000 S. Milwaukee, Denver, Co) with a private graveside service to follow October 17th, 2026. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of Herma’s favorite charities- Mountain States Children’s Home or Colorado Wildlife Preserve.
