Henry George Wiggers. Born May 25th, 1932. Passed away December 5th, 2024.
Henry was born in Temple, TX to Ima and G.H. (Sonny) Wiggers. He had one older sister, Mary Punchard. Henry grew up in Temple and graduated from Temple High School in 1950, where he excelled in multiple sports, and earned a scholarship to Schreiner College to play football. Henry was drafted into the U.S. Army after his second year of college, serving from 1952 to 1954 in Germany as a radar operator, and was a Corporal at time of separation. Henry regularly spoke with great fondness about his experience in the Army. He was always appreciative of the bond with his fellow soldiers, the personal growth, the opportunity to see another part of the world, and of the education assistance received through the G.I. Bill.
After visiting Southwest Texas Teacher’s College with a couple of his Army buddies, he decided to enroll there to pursue an Industrial Arts teaching degree. Henry met Patsy Kaye Rush at SWT early in 1957, and after the second date in February they started making wedding plans, marrying on August 30, 1957. Both Patsy and Henry graduated and were teachers for the next five years in Hitchcock and Odessa, Texas. Patsy taught elementary school and Henry taught middle school shop and coached several sports. Henry decided to change careers, working for Railway Express and managing offices in Longview, TX, Kansas City, and Amarillo, TX. Henry began working for Levi Strauss in 1971 and retired in 1997, living in Amarillo, El Paso and San Antonio during that time.
Henry and Patsy took the opportunity to change cities several times in their marriage, settling in Amarillo to raise their family. The common thread through all the moves was the friendships they made with neighbors and with people they met in the churches where they became members. When they joined a church, they became involved in Sunday school, choir, and outreach. Henry was a man of strong faith, attending Sunday school and church services each week. He treasured his weekly get-togethers with the men’s group from Mission Hills Church. Henry chose to be very active in the lives of his sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren. After traveling back and forth from San Antonio to Littleton, CO for several years, Henry and Patsy made the decision to move to Colorado in 2004 to spend more time with their grandchildren. Henry and Patsy loved living in Colorado, appreciating the beauty of the state and eventually joining Mission Hills Church, making many more life-long friends. Henry was always a fan of high school sports, and in recent years, because of grandson Brady, he became a huge follower of the Littleton Public Schools boys’ volleyball team, supporting their state playoff run in 2024. Henry was always there for the live music performances of Kirk and Mason, frequently requesting a Merle Haggard or Kris Kristofferson tune.
Henry lost Patsy on March 20th, 2024, after her brave battle with cancer. After a short illness of his own, Henry entered hospice care in late November and passed away peacefully at home on December 5th, 2024, with his family at his side. Henry was an amazing father, grandfather, husband and friend. He is survived by sons Kirk Wiggers and Greg Wiggers, daughters-in-law Kirsten Wiggers and Laurie Wiggers, grandchildren Mason Wiggers, Cole Wiggers, Eva Wiggers and Brady Wiggers, sister-in-law Mary Rush, and nephews Ted Rush, Jeff Rush, Neil Punchard, David Punchard and Paul Punchard. His amazing stories and laughter will live on in all our memories. He is greatly missed.
