Harema Daisy Smith, lovingly known as “Nanny,” passed away surrounded by the love she gave so freely throughout her life. Born and raised in Tiger Bay, Wales, she carried with her a deep sense of family, resilience, and compassion that shaped every chapter of her life.

While attending nursing school at Cambridge University, she met Air Force Sgt. Harry Smith Jr., whom she married on April 12, 1967. Together they built a life rooted in love and service, raising four children: Jayne, Cheryl, Terence, and Derek. As a devoted military wife, Harema traveled across the country before settling in Montbello in 1986.

Known to many as “Mrs. Rema,” she dedicated her life to serving others through her work and her community. She retired at age 79, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and unwavering care for those around her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mohamed and Alice Edith Ann Ali; her brother, Edward; and her sisters, Patricia and Ayesha.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 59 years, Harry Smith Jr.; her children; her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a wide circle of family, friends, and neighbors who will forever cherish her memory.

Nanny was the heart of her family—a quiet, steady presence who made everyone feel seen and loved. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy of love lives on in all who knew her.

Never goodbye—only see you later.
