Gustavo Perez

October 23, 1938 — August 16, 2025

Born in Brownsville, Texas, Gustavo lived a life of service, dedication, and love for his family and country. As a teenager, he proudly joined the U.S. Army, serving over 20 years, including at least two tours in Vietnam. During his distinguished military career, he earned numerous honors, including the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and rose to the rank of Master Sergeant (MSG E-8).

After his military service, Gustavo continued his commitment to hard work and community through a 20+ year career with the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in the early 2008.

Gustavo had a passion for travel, whether it was visiting South Padre Island or exploring the scenic beauty of Colorado. He enjoyed family gatherings, watching sports, and testing his luck at the casinos. Known for his humor, warmth, and genuine interest in others, he was a man who always put family and friends at the heart of his life. Music was another love of his; He always had the perfect playlist ready for a road trip or a celebration.

He is survived by his loving wife, Angie Perez; children Edward Perez, Sheila Gaddie, and Mark Perez; grandchildren Ian Michael Perez, Brian Perez; sister Mary Lopez Hector; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will carry his memory forward.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Vanessa Jean Hurlbert; grandchild Jacob Ryan Hurlbert; parents Luz Vasquez Perez and Lorenzo Perez; and siblings Martin Perez, Esperanza Garzoria, Hilaria Rocha, Rosario Solis, Elida Perez, and Antonia Rangel.

Gustavo’s legacy is one of service, generosity, and love; a true family man and patriot who defended his country with honor and lived his life with kindness and integrity.
