Gladys J. Baker

August 13, 1926 — May 14, 2025

Denver

Gladys “Myke” Baker, age 98, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2025, in Denver, Colorado.
Myke was born on August 13, 1926, in Lake Mills, Iowa, and grew up attending Ventura schools. She married Loyd Spilman in 1946, and the two built a life together on a farm outside of Clear Lake, Iowa, raising three children: Sheryl, Kathy, and Carol. After Loyd’s passing, she married Don Baker in 1974. Myke lived in Sun City, Arizona, from 1983 to 1988 before returning to Iowa and eventually moving to Colorado. Known for her warmth, humor, and generous spirit, Myke had a gift for making others feel welcome. She was an incredible cook whose fried chicken and homemade desserts were legendary. Her home was often filled with delicious aromas, laughter, and the joyful noise of family and friends gathered around her table. Myke had a zest for life. She loved visiting with friends, shopping, dancing, and—rearranging her furniture just to keep things interesting. She found joy in the little things and made the most out of every moment. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Loyd Spilman and Don Baker; her daughter, Carol Spilman; sons-in-law Dennis Baker and Tim Johnson; stepson Mark Baker; and grandson Matt Baker. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Kathy Baker and Sheryl Jacobs (Jeff); stepson Tim Baker (Deidre); ten grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. Her presence, kindness, and laughter will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Per Myke’s wishes, no formal services will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made in her honor to the Humane Society.
