Gerri was the fourth child born to parents Theodore Francis Berg and Agnes Wilhelmina Pimple Berg on March 27, 1934. During that time, the family resided on a farm about 14 miles from Sterling. Gerri often shared fond memories of growing up on their family farm. She and her siblings attended a one room school from grades 1 - 8 about two miles from their home on the farm. She often joked that she and her siblings made up the majority of students at the small grade school. While attending St. Anthony's high school in Sterling, she lived in an apartment with her older siblings.
She met her future husband Ray Schiel at St. Anthony High School. When Ray was 20 and Gerri was 19 they were married on April 6, 1953 and spent 65 wonderful years together raising a family. They had two sons, Tim and Mark in Sterling before moving to Denver in 1956. After moving to Denver, they had another son Dan. In 1959 they purchased the home they resided in for 63 years in Lakewood, Colorado. There they had two more children; a son, Gary and finally a daughter, Ann Marie.
Gerri was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. She was lovingly known as Grandma Gerri to many nieces, nephews, and their children.
Gerri loved to include her family in her passions of gardening, sewing, and crafting. With the help of a neighbor, Gerri refined her sewing skills in order to make dresses for her daughter. After many years of sewing for her family and extended family, Gerri began using her passion to help others by sewing clothes and blankets for Mommy Rocks, an organization dear to her heart.
