George Wallace Mueller, Jr., age 79, passed away on August 21st, 2024 at the Medical Center for the Rockies in Loveland, Colorado. He was born in Cincinnati on May 17th, 1945, and graduated from Wyoming High School in Wyoming, Ohio in 1963. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in English at Davidson College in 1967 and a Doctor of Law (J.D.) degree at the University of Cincinnati in 1970. In 1967 he met Sherry Anne McCarty, whom he married on August 16th, 1969. After completing military law school in Charlottesville, VA in 1971, he entered the Judge Advocate General’s Corps as a Captain at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, CO and in 1972 was transferred to South Korea. In 1973 he returned to Fort Carson and was honorably discharged from the military in 1974. He then moved to Arvada, CO to join the law firm Burns & Wall, eventually becoming a partner, expanding the firm to Burns, Wall, Smith & Mueller. After a long career in oil and gas litigation, he retired in 2013 but continued to be an arbiter, mediator, and do pro bono legal work for the rest of his life.
Mr. Mueller was deeply committed to his Christian faith, assuming many leadership and service roles at Arvada Covenant Church. Among his many ministries, he was particularly dedicated to serving and supporting the homeless: he organized safe parking and extreme weather shelters, organized free legal clinics, as well as served as a mentor for Colorado Homeless Families. He was a tutor for Whiz Kids, a Gideon who distributed bibles at local secondary schools and colleges, an active participant in the Justice and Mercy Legal Aid Center and Mean Streets, and a board member for Alaska Christian College.
He was an active outdoorsman, a regular runner and fly fisherman, and played golf and tennis as much as he possibly could. Perhaps most of all, he was a fan of sports, particularly of those his grandchildren played – if he didn’t have to miss their baseball, basketball, football, lacrosse, or soccer games, he wouldn’t. Being the English major and lawyer he was, he also loved to read and enjoyed participating in bible studies and book clubs, often meeting with dear friends over breakfast to discuss scripture, history, and politics.
He is survived by his wife Sherry, their son Alex (Tiffany Shaw) of Arlington, MA, their daughter Katie (Brandon) Patterson of Arvada, CO, and grandchildren Harriet Mueller and Louise Mueller of Arlington, MA, and George Patterson and Winston Patterson of Arvada, CO. He is also survived by his sister, Stephanie (Michael) Riley of Oakland Township, MI and their children, who refer to him as “Geordie,” his childhood name.
The memorial service will take place at Arvada Covenant Church on Friday, September 13th at 10 a.m. A light lunch will be served for all after the service. He will have a private burial later that day with military honors at Fort Logan cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to Alaska Christian College (https://alaskacc.edu/give/), the Safe Parking Initiative at Arvada Covenant (https://arvadacovenant.org/give-2/ - note “Safe Parking”), and Whiz Kids (https://www.whizkidstutoring.com/).
