George Congrave

August 20, 1936 — October 20, 2020

George James Campbell Congrave, 84, of Littleton, Colorado passed away on October 20, 2020.  George was born on August 20, 1936 in Edmonton, Alberta to his thrilled and very proud parents, George and Rachel Congrave.

As a child George discovered his love of sports especially hockey, baseball and basketball. At age 12 his father was transferred to Edson, but three years later his father was tragically killed in a work accident. George, his mother and sister Elizabeth moved back to Edmonton to be with family. After graduating from Westglen High School, George was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings but chose to pursue his education in Chemical Engineering at Denver University with a full hocky scholarship. But during a practice George suffered a near fatal accident when a teammates skate pierced his temple.

After being unconscious for several weeks, George was moved to Craig Rehabilitation Centre to face his injuries.  Unable to talk and paralyzed on his right side, George began the long journey of rehabilitation therapy with incredible courage and determination, gradually over the years regaining his speech and the ability to walk with a brace.

In 1967 George married Margaret Mary Roberts, the love of his life.  They worked at DU intermural sports and other businesses until their retirement and then enjoyed a number of warm winters at Paradise Village in Nuevo Vallarta where they, of course, made many friends!  They loved Mexico and the Mexican people.  They were married 53 years last March!!

George is survived by his wife Margaret, sister, Elizabeth Soltys and family, his special friend Catherine Ford, and numerous friends in Canada and the United States.  He is preceded in death by his parents George Congrave and Rachel Congrave Pattinson, stepfather Jack Pattinson and brother-in-law Mel Soltys.
