George Alderson Sanders, affectionately known as “Chief,” passed away peacefully on April 27, 2026, in Parker, Colorado, at the age of 84. He was a longtime resident of Aurora, Colorado.
George was born on August 4, 1941, in Eden, North Carolina, to J.W. and Marvis (McGuire) Sanders. After graduating from high school in 1959, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he proudly served his country for more than 20 years before retiring in 1981. Following his military service, George continued his career in logistics and supply with Martin Marietta, where he was known for his dedication and strong work ethic.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Janice, and his loving sons: George Jr. “Skip” (Elizabeth) and Scott (Cheryl) Sanders. He was a proud grandfather to Lauren Sanders, Samantha Hollander, and Colton and Carter Sanders, all of whom brought him great joy. He was preceded in death by his parents, J.W. and Marvis Sanders, and his brothers, Joseph and Henry Sanders.
George had a great sense of humor and a knack for making people laugh—often with just a look or a perfectly timed comment. A man of few words, he spoke most clearly through his actions, showing deep care and genuine concern for the people in his life.
He was an avid golfer and, in retirement, could be found on the golf course as often as possible—if the weather cooperated, that’s where he was. He loved sports, especially cheering on the North Carolina Tar Heels basketball team and the Alabama Crimson Tide football team. He rarely missed a game if he could help it.
When his sons were growing up, George spent many years coaching their football and baseball teams, earning the nickname “Sandy” among their friends. In later years, he took just as much pride in teaching his grandchildren about sports and being present at their games and activities, always their steady and supportive fan.
George’s life was defined by quiet strength, loyalty, and love for his family. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
