Gary Ernest Fischer—devoted husband, proud father and grandfather, loyal friend, and unforgettable spirit—passed away on September 5, 2025, at the age of 79. Born November 10, 1945, Gary embraced his life with an energy and enthusiasm that was impossible to miss. His motto, “work hard, play hard,” wasn’t just a saying; it was the way he lived, and everyone who knew him felt it.

Nothing brought Gary more pride and joy than his family—he celebrated every accomplishment, big or small, and created countless memories they’ll carry forever. Gary is survived by his wife and best friend, Barbara Fischer; his daughter Megan and her husband Josh; his daughter Kirsten, her husband, Curt, and their children, Cassidy and Taren; and his son Cory, his wife, Katie, and their children, Bret and Brooklyn. Gary was preceded in death by his beloved son Ryan, whom he carried in his heart always.

Gary’s life was defined by his courage, innovation, curiosity, generosity, and, perhaps most importantly, fun. Known for his larger-than-life personality, he was a coach, teacher, athlete, pilot, and mentor—roles he approached with both skill and heart. Flying was one of Gary’s greatest joys; he loved being in the sky, exploring new places, and sharing his passion for aviation with others.

He inspired people to push harder, laugh louder, and believe in themselves. His sharp wit, storytelling, and boundless curiosity made him the kind of person you could talk to for hours—about anything from history to sports to the latest technology (while carefully steering clear of politics).

Outside of work and community, Gary was always on the move. He loved boating, skiing, tennis, playing drums, computer games, nice cars, and especially flying. Whether soaring above the clouds or captaining a boat across the water, he was happiest with the wind in his hair (the little that he did have) or surrounded by family and friends. He also had a mischievous streak. From his legendary battle with neighborhood woodpeckers to his hilarious dad jokes, Gary brought humor and lightness wherever he went. Gatherings with him were never ordinary; they were full of laughter, good food, some drinks, and a feeling of belonging.

Gary’s legacy is one of energy, kindness, and joy. He will be remembered for his intelligence, drive, and ability to light up a room, but even more for the love he poured into his family and his friendships. His story lives on in the adventures, memories, and inspiration he shared with all who knew him.

The family invites friends and loved ones to join them in celebrating Gary’s remarkable life. A service will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery on Thursday, September 25, at 11:00 am at 4400 W. Kenyon Ave., Denver, CO 80235. (Map of Fort Logan located in the photo gallery below.)
