Gary Campbell, age 59, of Lakewood. LCDR, USN Ret. 29 yrs. submarine service. Husband of Barbara. Father of Carole. Son of Marge. Grandfather of Campbell & Connor. Memorial Service Monday, 10:00 A.M. at Green Mountain United Methodist Church. Memorial donations suggested to the American Cancer Society. Gary was born July 31, 1944 in Bayard, Nebraska, his mother Marge's hometown. He had a sister Christy and a brother Craig. His father Bob Campbell was in the military and the family lived in Berlin and Puerto Rico. While in Puerto Rico, Gary graduated from Antilles High School. In recent years his graduating class has gotten together for many fun reunions, the last was held in June in Puerto Rico. Gary was in the U.S. Navy submarine service from 1962 to 1991. He served aboard the USS Clamagore, USS Thomas Edison, USS Robert E. Lee and commissioned the USS Alabama. He met Barbara French while she was also in the Navy and they married October 22, 1976. Gary retired from the Navy in 1991. Gary had a son Doug who preceded him in death in 1997. His daughter Carole (Jerry) has two children, Campbell and Connor. They live in Houston, Texas. Gary played senior softball and baseball until becoming an avid golfer. After struggling with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) since 1988, Gary finally passed peacefully in the company of family and friends on August 10, 2003. He wished to thank all the caring nurses on Kaiser's staff and the hospice nurses from Metro Hospice of Denver for easing his path. Gary was a devoted husband, loving son, caring father and loyal friend. He will be missed by those who knew and loved him.
