Frances Wendell Stoss

May 22, 1919 — October 25, 2014

Frances Wendell Stoss, 95, passed away on October 25, 2014 following a bout of pneumonia. A first generation American, Frances was born in Comstock, MN, May 22, 1919 as the oldest of twin daughters. Following matriculation from secretarial college, she was recruited by the FBI and held a position in J. Edgar Hoover's secretarial pool where she was known as lead fielder and hitter on the women's softball team. She met her husband, Martin while attending a dance studio's social event, and always remembered him saying, ""I can see eye to eye with you."" She was ""five feet, 12 inches tall."" They were married October 18, 1947. As a stay-at-home mother in the 1950's, Mrs. Stoss played with the neighborhood children and never surprised the kids when she hit a ball over the outfield fence. She was an active leader in the Girl Scouts, PTA and supported her daughters in school activities. In the 60's Frances went to work for The World Bank where she took a small typing pool from typewriters to desk-top computers. She retired in 1981 and moved to Colorado with her twin sister where she got pleasure from doing projects with her twin, sitting on her patio enjoying the sunshine, working crossword puzzles, and cooking special meals for her family--her fried chicken and pork roast will never be equaled. In 2010 as dementia and failing eyesight slowed her down, she moved into residences where she continued to be well loved, having such a sweet personality and always ready to participate in doing crossword puzzles even though the clues had to be read to her. Her long-armed hugs and strong handshakes will always be remembered. Frances is survived by her daughters, Francine ""Franny"" and Marlene (Duane) Nicholas; grandson Justin (Rachel), and great granddaughter Natalie. She is preceded in death by her husband Martin, twin sister Fern W. Edwards, brother Arvid and son-in-law, Frank Frank. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ the Savior Lutheran Church, 1092 S. Nome Street, Aurora, CO 80012. Services will be held at the Church at 10:00am, Thursday, Oct 30 with a viewing in the narthex 30 minutes before the service. A private interment will be held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
