F. Reed Hainsworth, age 81, of Denver Colorado passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on May 10, 2023 following complications from a fall and brief hospitalization.
Reed was born in Norfolk, Virginia on June 25, 1941. He is preceded in death by his parents, Frances (Hodges) Hainsworth and Waldo Reed Hainsworth. He is survived by his wife Diane (Smith) Hainsworth, his daughters Charlotte Moore (Michael) of Chesapeake, Virginia, Emily Martorano (Stefan) of Denver, Colorado, and his four grandchildren Audrey Moore, Jackson Moore, Nova Martorano, and Felix Martorano. He is also survived by his sister Elaine (Hainsworth) Hayes and her family of Virginia Beach, VA.
Reed grew up in areas of Virginia, New Jersey and Massachusetts before graduating high school in Whitinsville, MA and receiving his bachelor’s degree from Clark University. He went on to receive his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania and a post-doctoral fellowship at Duke University. He began working at Syracuse University in 1969 and taught in the Biology Department until his retirement in December 2009.
During his long professional career Reed researched geese flight patterns, the energetics of foraging using hummingbird models, and published extensively. He also enjoyed teaching research methods to undergraduates and graduate students at Syracuse University.
He spent years enjoying the daily walk between his home and office in Syracuse in weather of all extremes. He loved his family, adored his grandchildren, and enjoyed retirement in Denver where he could be closer to family.
Reed was an intelligent, articulate and caring man who had a great sense of humor and loved to tease his kids, grandkids (and his wife!). He will be missed beyond measure.
The family would like to thank the staff of the ICU at Denver Health Medical Center for the care and compassion received by the entire family during Reed’s time there.
