Eugene Roman Cody

May 9, 1932 - December 12, 2023

Eugene (Gene) Cody was born on May 9, 1932 in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Gene was the second youngest of six children, having three brothers and two sisters. At the age of 15, he used a plank from an old bridge and built a race car. He entered it into the local soap box derby and won! This earned him a spot in the International Soap Box Derby Championship in Akron, Ohio.

Gene graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1949. Two years later Gene entered the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. He graduated in 1955 with a degree in business administration majoring in industrial management. Go Big Red!

After graduation he accepted employment with Boeing Airplane Company in Wichita, Kansas. While carpooling to Boeing he met the love of his life, Doris Edwards. They were married in March of 1957 in Wichita and lived there until April of 1960.

In 1960, Gene was hired by the Martin Company in their aerospace division as a cost estimator. This moved them to Littleton, Colorado where he worked for 31 years on projects such as the space shuttle, the Titan launch vehicle and the Viking mission to Mars. These programs took him to many different parts of the United States. During his time they raised their two children, Brad and Christie. He was also an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Gene embraced the Colorado lifestyle of camping, fishing, skiing, and golfing and enjoyed all professional sports. He was a big Denver Broncos fan, but he never abandoned his Nebraska Cornhuskers.

He retired from Martin Marietta in 1991 as an estimating manager. He continued as a consultant for Martin which took him and Doris on long term assignments to the Washington D.C. area and Daytona Beach, Florida. Throughout retirement, Doris and Gene enjoyed many cruises, trips with family and friends, golfing, biking, and bridge clubs. Gene was a certified volunteer tax preparer during tax season. In the last 28 years, he was able to watch his four granddaughters grow up and attended many of their activities.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father Julia and Thomas Cody, his sister Valerie (Don) Sewell, brothers Donald (Roberta) Cody, Floyd (Donna) Cody, and Wilbur (Jo) Cody. He is survived by Doris, his wife of 66 years, his son Brad (Jenny) Cody, daughter Christie (Ed) Eversole, his four granddaughters Kayla Eversole, Lindsey Eversole, Rachel Cody, and Claire Cody, and his sister Sharon Cody.
