Ellen Stabler Hewitt

August 9, 1921 — September 9, 2014

Ellen was born August 9, 1921 in Salisbury, N. Carolina, the daughter of Sydney S. Stabler, Jr. and Mary (Cobey) Stabler. She lived in Sandy Spring, MD and Washington, DC as a young girl. She saved money for college by working for an insurance company and a government agency. She began her studies in Home Economics at the University of Maryland, where she met her husband, Barton G. Hewitt, in their church choir. She and Bart, a TWA pilot, were married from 1943 to 1988, and she was happy to pursue her chosen calling as homemaker and loving mother. Ellen stayed at home with her children and would often say that ""all she ever wanted to be was a wife and mother."" She loved to cook and bake for her family, which increased to a household of eight when she brought her elderly mother from Maryland to her home, to take care of her. She lived near Kansas City and Chicago while her children were growing up. When they were young, they would play in fields of tall grass near their home with their Irish Setter close behind. She always knew where they were when she saw the dog's tail waiving above the grass. Her dinner bell called them home, and they came running. Ellen lived in Switzerland in 1968 and 1969 with Bart and her youngest daughter, Jeannette. She traveled all over the world, always curious about foreign cultures. She made a trip around the world in 16 days with Bart as Captain on TWA's Flight One. Together with him she encouraged and enabled all of her children to experience life abroad. They made Evergreen, CO their final home in 1970. ML, their older daughter, went to CSU and loved Colorado so much that they decided to follow her. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Religious Studies at Loretto Heights College in 1983 at age 52. In her later years she kept her mind active with word puzzles, including the New York Times crossword puzzle. She was an enthusiastic fan of the Colorado Rockies, never missing a game on TV. She knew all of the players. She once attended a game in her 80's and announced, peering at the first baseman through her binoculars, ""Andres Gallaraga has a marvelous physique!"" She was a beloved founding member of St. Laurence Episcopal Church in Conifer, CO and was a dedicated volunteer in her churches and communities all of her life. Ellen's surviving children are Frederic (Mei) Hewitt, ML (Laren) Winter, Richard Hewitt, Jeannette (Don) Auman, six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and her sister-in-law, Sallie Hewitt. She was preceded in death by her son James B. Hewitt in 1993.
