Eldon "Dwight" Schmitt

Eldon Dwight Schmitt, 88, of Larkspur, Colorado, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2025.

He was born on November 11, 1936 in St. Francis, Kansas to Theodore and Esther Schmitt. The family soon moved to Colorado, where after graduating from Alameda High School, Dwight enlisted in the Army. Dwight’s service in Germany engendered in him a love of all things German - in particular wienerschnitzel. After his service, Dwight embarked on a career in telecommunications as a lineman for Mountain States Telephone. He steadily climbed the corporate ladder holding positions as a Service Foreman, Supervising Service Foreman, Operations Manager and District Manager. He retired from AT&T in 1989 to soon begin his next career phase as Director of Information Technology for Denver Public Schools. Over the years, Dwight created a loving network of friends and co-workers that became family.

Dwight enjoyed traveling and found great joy in creating and building projects, whether it be home improvements, woodworking or tinkering on the many automobiles he purchased over the years. He discovered a passion for golf, even playing in a handful of Pro-Ams, his favorite round being with Phil Mickelson. He was an avid Colorado sports fan. He especially enjoyed Denver Broncos football games and was a loyal season ticket holder for many years. Dwight was an animal lover, and for most of his adult life could be found with a terrier often not far behind.

Preceded in death by wife Fredericka (Zabel) and Janice (Cameron). Dwight is survived by beloved companion Diane, daughter Linda, sister Melva, stepchildren Zach, Jeff, Kelli, many grand and great grandchildren.

While it’s impossible to put into words the number of lives he impacted, those who knew Dwight will remember him for his calm demeanor no matter the situation, trustworthy wisdom, thoughtful and generous spirit and impeccable golf game. He will be missed by all of us who loved him dearly.
