Edward J. Greenwald

Edward Jacob Greenwald of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, passed away on Wednesday June 10,2026 at age 77 after a courageous battle with a chronic illness. Ed was born on February 13,1949 on his father’s and his maternal grandmother’s birthday in Denver.

Predeceased by his parents Jacob and Marcella (Dischner) Greenwald, brother Martin, sister-in-law Becky and his son Matthew Greenwald.

Ed attended Mullen High School in Denver then Colorado University in Boulder earning a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing. He was a member of the Colorado Army National Guard for several years. He worked for Public Service Company of Colorado which became Xcel Energy. He worked for the company for 40 years in various departments starting as a meter reader then promoted to many supervisor positions ending as the supervisor of the Marketing department. He was “riffed” from the company and worked a year at Ace Hardware. He was re-employed by Xcel to the motor pool then transferred to the meter reading department. He retired from Xcel at age 64.

He always revered to himself as Big Ed-not because he was heavy in weight but because he was 6ft 6 inches tall. He was an avid golfer. He learned to play golf at age 12 years by being a caddy at Willis Case Golf Course. His love of golf and his academic skills earned him an Evan Scholarship to CU. His tuition and board were covered by the scholarship but meals were a different story. To enjoy meals meant “hashing” at a nearby sorority where he learned his clean up after meal skills. He loved all sports. He played basketball from the 1970’s until age 40 when his knees gave out. He played many years at the Links Golf course in Highlands Ranch in the Men’s and couple leagues. He won multiple tournaments as well as a few Club Championships.

He enjoyed travelling to Arizona for golf, Mexico, Italy, Australia, Ireland and Scotland. But his favorite by far was Jamaica.

Ed is survived by his wife Joan Marie, who was the love of his life and soul mate. They were married July 5,1974 at Mother Cabrini Shrine after an 11 month courtship. They were devoted to each other for 52 years – a lifetime of love, partnership, and choosing each other every day. He is also survived by their son Douglas, daughter-in-law Ashley, grandchildren Ashlynn, Ella and Landon, step grandchildren Brielle and Sienna.

He loved his country, his family, his friends, golf buddies and neighbors. We will all miss his dry sense of humor and his snarky remarks. He was always eager to help family and friends be it teaching golf to his wife or granddaughter or fixing various things. The man could fix just about anything.

In celebration of being a Colorado native and for his love of sports, we ask attendees to his service to wear a sport shirt or jersey from your favorite Colorado sport teams.
