Ed (The Great Red Ed) Fowler, 71, passed on September 17, 2025. Born August 9, 1954, he leaves behind dear friends, a sister, and three nephews. He was both a gifted musician, visual artist, and dedicated Broncos’ Fan.
Ed was a founding member of Walls of Genius, playing with founding member Evan Cantor and eventually Little Fyodor. His love for “so bad it’s good” aesthetic was a hug influence on the direction taken by Walls of Genius. More than anything else, Ed was a miraculous psychedelic heavy metal guitar whizz. Even in the depths of Walls of Genius’ most silly and frivolous idiocy, Ed’s genius guitar playing would shine through. Before retiring from the stage, he performed at such storied venues as Boulder’s Blue Note, the Pearl Street Music Hall in Denver and Los Angeles’ Anti-Club.
Ed’s embrace of the absurd and the ironic ‘so-bad-it’s-good’ aesthetic was ahead of its time. When the music was given a rest, Ed would entertain others with his collection of “bad” videos and records. This continued through with his surrealistic artwork that is still in cherished private collections. We could all find Ed adding to his 5th mention on the Wall of Foam at Old Chicago’s, Trivia at Applebee’s, performing magic for family, or his zealous dedication to the Denver Broncos while enjoying a Silver Bullet.
A Celebration of The Great Red Ed’s life will be held at the Old Chicago Aurora location, 16699 East Iliff Ave, Aurora, CO 80013 on Saturday, October 11th at 1:00 pm. Come listen to the Walls of Genius hits and deep cuts of Rumours of Marriage, share stories, and raise a pint to The Great Red Ed.
