Dr. David W. Hubly

Dr. David W. Hubly passed away April 16, 2020, of natural causes at his home in San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico. He was a longtime resident of Colorado before moving to his home in San Carlos several years ago. He taught Civil Engineering for years at the University of Colorado Denver, where he also served as interim Dean of the College of Engineering and professor emeritus.

He is survived by his former wife, Barbara Jo Hubly, and their three children: Kristen Hubly Petersmith (Tim Beckett), Central City, CO; Scott Hubly, Coos Bay, OR, and Mark Hubly (Chris), Rochester, MN; three step-children (Sarah Yoesting Rossen, Jonathan OldHorse and Andrew Yoesting); six grandchildren (Shayna, Justin, David, Michael, Rachel and Madeline), and three great-grandchildren. In addition, survivors include Sharon Yoesting Wilson, former wife; Jane Hubly Boller, Minneapolis, sister; James Hubly (Susan), Seattle, brother, and numerous nieces and nephews

Dr. Hubly was preceded in death by his wife, Hana Archard, as well as his parents, John and Eleanor Hubly of Cedar Rapids, IA, and his brother-in-law, Max A. Boller, MD.

Born in Battle Creek, MI in August, 1935, Dr. Hubly graduated from Boardman High School, Youngstown, OH in 1953 and attended the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He transferred to Iowa State University in Ames, IA, where he earned undergraduate and eventually, Masters and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering.

Before entering graduate school. he and his family lived in Cedar Rapids, where he owned a concrete heavy equipment dealership.

Moving to Denver in the 1970's, he built a Civil Engineering consulting practice before entering academia. He made many volunteer mission trips to areas in Africa suffering from drought, famine or civil war, working with NGOs such as the Water Sanitation Consultancy Group (WSCG) and Denver Sister Cities, to establish safe water supply systems in Ethiopia and other African countries, creating a lasting impact on people in the area and potentially saving countless lives. He also worked with developing countries in the Middle East, such as Qatar, Bahrain and Dubai, to help build or improve engineering programs in their universities.

An accomplished duplicate bridge player and a private airplane pilot, Dr.Hubly was also an avid sailor who spent many happy hours as captain of his beloved sail boat. Traveling was another of his keen interests, along with spending time with his family. He was a member of Rotary International.

Interment and a Celebration of Life service will be held in Colorado at a later date. Memorials preferred to Denver Sister Cities International (Axum, Ethiopia), 2650 East 40th Ave., Denver, CO 80205, or ROCKBlue.org, partners with water and sanitation utilities in the developing world.
