Mrs. Dorothy Thies, 90, a resident of Arvada passed away at Nightingale Suites. Dorothy was the wife of Barry H. Thies; mother of Brian (Cheryl) Thies and Diane (Gary) Luecke; grandmother of Mitchell, Desiree, Jordan Thies; Kristen, Emma, Renae, Alan & Jacob Luecke. She also was a great-grandmother to 5 great-grandchildren. Dorothy was preceded in death by 6 siblings. Her sister Mrs. Jean Roup, of Centennial passed just 17 days after her.
Dorothy was born in Fort Morgan, Colorado and graduated from Brush High School in 1950. At the age of 19, while working for Sun Oil Company in Denver, she was named Miss Colorado Petroleum. She won an all-expense trip to the Tournament of Roses and Rose Bowl football game in 1951. While there she toured Hollywood.
In 1956, she took a two-month tour of Europe with friends. She returned from the trip and met her future husband, Barry. They were married in 1958 on the 19th of July at Messiah Lutheran Church.
After raising her children, she worked at the Denver Merchandise Mart and for Mark Sales Company. She retired from Zipp & Gold candy distributer in 1996 and spent the remainder of her years enjoying her family. She was a member of Valley Lutheran Church for decades and made many lasting friendships throughout the years. Her husband Barry passed away December 18, 2010.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at 11:00 am at Horan & McConaty Funeral Home located in Arvada. Private Interment at Fort Logan National Cemetery will be held on January 10th.
