Dorothy Ann Herbst Short

Dorothy Ann Herbst Short was born in Denver, Colorado February 4, 1925 to Carl and Delphine Herbst (both deceased). She was the oldest child with one sister Geraldine Winegardner and one brother Carl Jr. (both deceased).

Dorothy attended South Denver High School and the University of Colorado in Boulder. Dorothy was a member of the Greatest Generation and so lived through many of the challenges of that time including the Depression and World War II.

She married in 1944 and had two children Roger (deceased) and Ronald. Dorothy loved being a mother and many of her activities revolved around her boys world of school and sports. After she won a trampoline from Anderson Toyland in 1960, the family home became an entertainment mecca for her boys' friends; many of whom came to think of her as their second ""Mom"".

She also was an avid gardener, volunteer and club member including the Stephen Knight PTA, Denver Garden Club, bridge club, sewing club (of which she described herself as an enthusiastic cheerleader because she did not sew) and was a loving member of the Alley Cats. Dorothy loved being a ""Baby Whisperer"" and managed the DAC nursery for several years.

Dorothy welcomed three grandchildren: Katherine, Sarah and Britten. She was a doting grandmother who visited them often, cheerfully attending performances and sporting events. Cards from Grandma could be counted upon to arrive on every birthday and holiday and were much anticipated. She shared her love of music with her family and they have many fond memories of her piano and organ performances at home.

Dorothy lived on Bonnie Brae Boulevard for over seventy years in the house her father built where she and her siblings grew up. She lovingly nurtured her childhood home until her move to independent living at Brookdale University Park in 2009.

She loved travel, new experiences, music, ballroom dancing and spending time with friends and family.

In her later years at Brookdale, she showed resilience, fortitude and determination as she fought her way back to independence from a variety of surgeries and illnesses.

She is survived by her son Ron (spouse: Claudia) and three grandchildren.

A special thank you to the staff of Brookdale who comforted and cared for Dorothy and an enormous amount of gratitude to Janet (Jan) who was a constant source of knowledge, support and love for over ten years. She also especially enjoyed having a grandchild (Katherine) who lived in Denver. There are too many additional family and friends to list who kept in touch with Dorothy and cared for her in so many ways. Thank you!

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, January 10, 2018 at Brookdale University Park, 2020 S. Monroe, 80210 with a reception after.

She will be interred with her parents and son, Roger, at the Fairmount Memorial Terrace.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be directed to either the Salvation Army or a charity of your choice.
