Dorothy Frances McGowan

August 14, 1929 — September 23, 2024

Denver, Colorado

Dorothy Frances McGowan, age 95, passed away peacefully at the Life Care Center of Westminster, on Monday, September 23, 2024, with her daughter by her side. Dorothy lived a long life full of family, friends, love, and laughter. She was dedicated to her husband, Jimmy, as well as raising her 3 children. Dorothy made their “house” a home, one that her daughter Maureen still lives in, to this day.

Dorothy worked for the telephone company in the accounting department, right out of school and helped to provide for herself and her widowed mother and grandfather. She was proud to be a single woman in the early 1950’s making a great living. She bought her family one of the first television sets on the market, owned her own car, and dressed fashionably every day. She could afford to travel and talked of her trips to New York City and Las Vegas to name a few. It was quite a big deal for a woman back then, to be so financially secure without the help of a man. That, however, did not last!

Dorothy was introduced to her future husband, James McGowan, on a blind date, and fell head over heels for him. They married May 6, 1961, and were blessed with their first child, Joe, 9 months and 6 days later. Then 14 months after having Joe they were blessed with Mary Kay (Sissy to all). They thought they were complete, but as we were always told, the third and only child they “planned”, Maureen, arrived 5 years later. Dorothy was lucky enough to live at the same address for over 60 years.

Dorothy is survived by her Children: Joseph McGowan (Charlene/Josh) and Maureen McGowan, Grandchildren: Tyler Black (Linda), Tori McGowan-Pope (William), Teddy Black (Wendy Serrano), Great-grandchildren: Henry and Connor Pope and Steven Black. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, James McGowan, and daughter, Mary Kay Black, as well as her parents and siblings.
