In 1954, she received the Visiting Nurses Scholarship to study at Columbia University in New York City. When she returned from New York, Dorothy worked in Dr. Ludwig's office and Bill was the manager of a local supermarket. She and Bill married in 1955 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the church that Bill's father had helped to construct, in Port Huron. Margaret was born in East Lansing on the campus of Michigan State University, where Bill was enrolled. They lived in Garden City and Madison Heights, two suburbs of Detroit, until 1967 when Bill was transferred to Denver by the supermarket company. Dorothy worked part time as the nurse for Wellshire Presbyterian Church Preschool and as a merchandiser for MJB Coffee Company. She volunteered as school nurse for various schools, as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, and gave immunization injections for the Tri-County Health Department in Arapahoe County.
