Doris J. Cushing passed away in Littleton, Colorado on July 20, 2026 at age 94. She was born on July 10, 1932, in Kingston, Illinois to Bess and Arthur Stark. She was a graduate of DeKalb High School and spent her working career as a secretary, first at DeKalb Ag, then Shell Oil, followed by many years in public schools.
Doris met Leo Cushing at an oil company bowling league event, and they were married in Denver in 1960. Because of Leo’s job with Texaco, they moved often, including time in Kansas, Wyoming, Montana, Oregon, and finally back to the Denver area.
She was an active volunteer at her church including being a Eucharistic minister, bringing communion to those in nursing homes, and serving as a classroom aide for third graders at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Academy in Denver.
She had a passion for reading and was a lifelong volunteer at libraries. She and Leo took many vacations in the U.S., including hikes and other adventures such as a balloon ride and horseback riding in the mountains. Later, she fulfilled her dream of international travel, visiting many countries with her favorite being a safari in Africa. At home, her rose garden was always her special pride, with meticulously tended gardens at homes in both Oregon and the Denver area.
Doris is survived by her daughter Colleen, her son David and his wife Linda Trent, and granddaughter Caroline Cushing. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Richard, and her husband, Leo.
Doris’ funeral will be on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Parish in Centennial, Colorado. Reception to follow in the church community center.
