Dolores S. Cuthbertson, 90, of Denver, Colorado, passed away peacefully in her sleep January 30, 2019. She was born July 4, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois to Walter E. and Ella (Nolan) Scott.
Dolores graduated from Northern Illinois Teacher's College (now Northern Illinois University) in 1949 and taught English at a primary school in Evanston, Illinois before meeting the love of her life, John B. ""Jack"" Cuthbertson, whom she married in Chicago on June 26, 1954. Jack and Dolores moved to Colorado in 1955 after their first son, David, was born.
In addition to raising nine children together during their marriage, Dolores also was passionate about civil rights, infant and children's causes, Catholic charities, and other volunteer duties. Some highlights of her lengthy volunteer service include Pre-Cana and Cana, Cursillo, Marriage Encounter, CCD teacher at Holy Trinity, St. Catherine's and Blessed Sacrament, LaLeche League, Junior Great Books, Girl Scouts, Red Cross, East Denver YMCA, Metropolitan YMCA, League of Women Voters, Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault, Denver Public Schools, National Jewish Hospital, RSVP, AARP, and Volunteers of America. Dolores received the Minoru Yasui Community Volunteer Award from The Denver Foundation in 2005. She and Jack were both Third Order Franciscans. They also fostered infants from birth to adoption through Catholic Charities.
Dolores is survived by all nine of her children: David Cuthbertson (Tara), Mary Ellen Garrett (Paul), Michael Cuthbertson (Betsy), Karen Cuthbertson, Ann Cuthbertson (Hans Brunner), John Cuthbertson, Paul Cuthbertson, Teresa Kliegerman (Roger), Rob Cuthbertson (Michelle); eleven grandchildren: Rae Lynn, Michael, and John Cuthbertson, Geoffrey Motyl, Paul Cuthbertson, Amelia and Isabel Brunner, Jack Kliegerman, Sam and Nora Cuthbertson; and one great-grandchild, Hayden Ritchie.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jack, her younger sister, Joan Gray, and her granddaughter Nicole Cuthbertson.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 21, 2019 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 4900 Montview Blvd., Denver, CO 80207.
Immediately following the Mass, family and friends are invited to join the family for a reception in the Hall at Blessed Sacrament.
A private burial will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery.
